Langley PTO Accomplishments SY19-20
Communication:
- Serving as a liaison with the school administration to best understand and support initiatives that help the school as a whole
- Working with our before and after school providers regarding enrichment and administration to help fund and organize clubs
- Updating and maintaining the www.Langleyelementary.org website
- Updating the information regarding the curriculum, before & aftercare, the new administration’s biographies, the school calendar, the staff directory
- Posting all DCPS emails and administration emails on the Tiger Tales blog as well as sharing with the PTO Listserv
- Sharing school and PTO information on our @LangleyTigersPTO Facebook Page & Instagram accounts
- Creating a formal Code of Conduct to keep the listserv respectful and productive
- Creating a digital membership form and updating & maintaining our active members’ information
- Actively recruiting families, community members and staff to join the PTO
Fundraising, Grants & Events:
- Raising over $28,000 from events, donations and school swag
- The Grants Cmte securing a $3,000 Whole Kids Foundation Garden + a Fruit Tree Foundation grant to pay for the plants that will make up the Food Forest
- Organizing the Fall Festival, Tiger Trek, Make Some Noise Auction, and Scholastic Book Fair
- Donating funds to purchase the food for Back to School BBQ & Winter Wonderland
- Organizing Movie Night
- Updating and distributing items purchased through the Langley PTSA Amazon Wish list
- Hosting a Nando’s Thanksgiving luncheon for the staff
- Showering our Langley Staff with love during Staff Appreciation week by mailing them cookies, gift cards and thank you notes to show our support for their hard work
- Purchasing over $3,000 worth of equipment to support the Langley Cheer team
Family Engagement and Support:
- Running a winter coat drive & uniform drive
- Purchasing & installing lockers to store coats and uniforms in Mr. Carr’s office
- Organizing uniforms and winter supplies by gender and size
- Collecting individual donations (of nearly $1,000) + re-allocating over $2,600 from PTO funds to purchase VISA gift cards and cleaning supplies for Langley families in need
- Working with teachers and parents/guardians to have a Room Parent for each classroom
- Working with our aftercare provider, Flex, to offer care on days off
- Organizing a cleaning supplies drive + purchasing items to make sure all classrooms have “cleaning kits” when school is in person
- Working with school administration, DDOT, Commissioner Pinkney, Councilman McDuffie, McKinley Tech, Harmony and MPD to advocate for safety improvements for T street in front of the school.
- Making a clearly marked "no parking and pick-up/drop off lane" in front of Langley
- Making a "no parking loading zone" in front of The Summit (for emergency vehicles and public transportation vehicles to use)
- Requesting a traffic enforcement officer during pickup and drop off hours (this person can give citations)
- Clearly marking the speed bump in front of the school
- Enforcing the current one-way restrictions on T street
- Asking for a traffic study to examine traffic issues around the school & whether T Street can be permanently made one way.
Garden & Wellness:
- Teaming up with FoodPrints, the Garden Committee and families to expand those participating in planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting our beautiful garden throughout the Spring & Summer
- Continuing to work with Landscape Architect, Lincoln Smith, PTO members and Administration to plan the Food Forest that is being installed at Langley & Harry Thomas
- Hiring a landscaper to mulch and weed the Langley Garden
- Hiring a landscaper to repair and mulch the damaged areas of our school playground
PTO Updates & Changes in Langley Leadership
- Working with our pro-bono attorneys to develop, propose and pass the new bylaws, transitioning the PTSA to a PTO
- Helping organize, recruit nominations and run an election for the Langley Principal Selection Panel
- Participating in the interview process resulting in the hiring of Principal Kristina Kellog and Assistant Principal Sandi Bear.
