The Conscious Discipline coach explained it all to us at Family Night. Feelings are real and important, and sometimes they’re big and strong, or even scary. But Conscious Discipline teaches kids and adults the skills they need to handle those feelings and stay composed, and helps them encourage each other along the way. In fact, composure and encouragement are the first two skills taught through Conscious Discipline.
“You can handle your feelings!” my daughter said to her two-year-old sister, who was flailing and wailing in a face-to-floor tantrum. It didn’t stop the tantrum, but I knew where that phrase came from—the socioemotional curriculum at Langley.

Early Learning Support teacher Sequins Gooding tours a local fire station with her students. Q. Where are you from?
A. I hail all the way from Newark, NJ. I also consider New York City my home because I spent my early adult life there. Q. What is your role at Langley? A. I am the lead teacher for the kindergarten through second grade Early Learning Support Classroom. This is my fifth year in that role and I LOVE it! I also serve as a member of the Family Engagement Leadership team. Q. How did you become a teacher? A. In high school, at the end of my junior year, a friend asked me to join the Future Educators of America Club. I’d secretly always wanted to be a teacher and immersed myself in the club the following year. My original plan was to be a high school science teacher. However, the third year of undergrad I took an intro to special education course and fell in love with the exceptional child. I decided to pursue a master’s degree in teaching students with severe and multiple disabilities including deaf-blindness. Lottery season is here, and Langley is ready to welcome new families! We would love to see you at EdFest or an Open House event.
Q: What are the Open House dates? A: Open House dates are: Tuesday, January 9, 2018, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM Tuesday, February 13, 2018 9:00 AM-10:00 AM Tuesday, March 13, 2018 9:00 AM-10:00 AM Tuesday, April 10, 2018 9:00 AM-10:00 AM Q: What is Early Action? A: Early Action means that all PK-3 and PK-4 students who live in-boundary for Langley and apply in the initial lottery will be accepted. We are thrilled to be able to welcome everyone in the boundary! http://www.myschooldc.org/faq/key-terms#faq-Early-Action-PK- |
