K-5th Grade students are taught the Common Core State Standards using the following research-based curricula: Project Lead the Way (hands-on engineering curriculum), Discovery Tech (grades 3-5), Eureka Math, Fundations Literacy (grades K-2), teacher-created materials, Fountas and Pinell Leveled Readers (small reading group instruction), and DCPS curriculum units. In addition, 1st-5th Grade students are provided additional support and enrichment through blended learning curricula: ST Math, iReady, and First in Math.
Each day students receive 120 minutes of literacy instruction, which includes foundational reading skills, small group instruction, and research and writing. Students participate in 90 minutes of math and 30 minutes of science instruction daily, in which they approach new concepts in small groups and individually . Teachers have time to work with small groups, providing intervention for struggling students and more challenging tasks for those who are ready. Students who are below grade level are provided support through fluency programs such as Fundations and additional Lexia support. Students also participate in a Project Lead the Way 10-week module that allows students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to learn math, science, and engineering concepts through discovery and innovation.
